“I like it.”

That thought alone kept me drinking for years longer than I really wanted. My life wasn’t at rock bottom and alcohol was fun so why on earth would I want to stop? Besides it was normal to drink – to celebrate, to commiserate and much else besides.

It wasn’t really hurting me and it wasn’t causing any major problems in my life. So while I wasn’t always happy with my drinking, I never really had any compelling motivation to stop. Meanwhile all around me people were drinking. It was the normal and natural thing to do. It was how we had fun.

This status quo was keeping me stuck, reinforced by the lack of hugely negative consequences. And of course the fact that I liked drinking. A chilled glass of white at the end of a hard day was a lovely treat. Not to mention mulled wine at Christmas and champagne at celebrations… Why on earth would I give up something that I liked?

In this episode, I explain how to look beyond “I like it”, explore where motivation comes from and why you don’t need to hit rock bottom to make a change around alcohol.
