Today’s episode talks about all or nothing thinking.
When you’re all in on something or all out. It’s all one way or all the other. When it comes to changing habits, this shows up as striving for nothing less than perfection or throwing in the towel and saying you’ll never change.
When you do really well. Perhaps for several weeks. Before you slip up and have a drink. Which is when the recriminations start: Why can’t you just do what you said you’d do? You’ve let yourself down again. You were doing so well and now you’ve screwed it all up.
At which point you press the nuclear switch and say: “well I’ve messed things up now so in for a penny in for a pound, I may as well enjoy this by having another drink and another and another. In fact this week/month is ruined so I may as well hold off trying to change until next week/month.”
You make one mistake a reason to throw yourself under the bus and back into the behaviour you’ve so studiously been trying to avoid. That is all or nothing thinking.
In this episode, I explain how to spot all or nothing thinking, why it doesn’t work and what to use instead for long-term success.
