Managing over desire is a skill that lies at the root of managing and changing your overdrinking.
If you drink it’s because you desire alcohol. If you over drink it’s because you over desire alcohol. It’s when you feel as though you’re drinking against your own will, despite your best efforts to change your behaviour.
Over desire is exactly as it sounds – taking the natural, human response of desire and concentrating the experience. It’s a modern day thing that we humans have created. Knowing how wonderful desire makes us feel, we’ve boiled it down and found ways to deliver even more of it to ourselves. It’s as though someone thought: desire is good, over desire is better.
Overdesire involves releasing elevated levels of dopamine in the brain. This leads to highly concentrated pleasure, but by managing over desire you don’t have to let it stop you. It’s one of the main topics I cover with my clients but straightforward and simple to navigate when you know how.
